Our department is actively involved in the training of medical undergraduate and post-graduate students from CUHK, radiography students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, trainees from the Hong Kong College of Radiologists, and is involved in the organisation of regular Training Courses and Meetings.
The CUHK Radiology undergraduate teaching program is integrated with the preclinical and clinical curriculum, and comprises teaching in Radiological Anatomy, Radiological Pathology, and Clinical Radiology.
Teaching is structured by systems comprising pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, nervous, musculoskeletal, head & neck and vascular systems. At the end of the undergraduate radiology teaching program, students are expected to understand the advantages, limitations, risks and indications for different imaging techniques, identify normal and abnormal radiological anatomy, and interpret images for basic emergency and common disorders.
Radiology has an essential role in medicine for diagnosis, disease monitoring, and minimally invasive treatment. We have a comprehensive and structured CUHK Radiology teaching programme that provides a continuum across the curriculum in the pre-clinical and clinical years. This puts Radiology teaching at the heart of undergraduate medical student teaching.
Medical students acquire the knowledge and skills to:
(1) Understand the strengths & weaknesses of imaging investigations/modalities
(2) Select imaging investigations thoughtfully in the context of a patient’s clinical presentation, patient safety, and health care resources
(3) Prepare patients for imaging investigations and provide relevant information on the radiology request form
(4) Distinguish normal from abnormal images and know when to seek advice
(5) Interpret basic images of common & emergency disorders
(6) Check the radiology report with the images, the responsibility for which is likely to increase with the introduction of AI generated reports

The Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology accepts students yearly for our MPhil or PhD programs. The most common application date is before the end of one year, and if selected, students will enrol in early August of the next year.
There are three types of studentships, 1) Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) by Hong Kong government, which is extremely competitive and only selects the best candidates; 2) Studentship by the University; 3) Studentship by individual professor’s research grants. Note that most of the current students are supported by university studentship. Occasionally, we also accept self-financed students.
To apply for HKPFS, students have to have a professor supervisor to endorse their application. To apply for studentship allocated by the University, it is not essential for an applicant to seek the endorsement from a professorial supervisor.
Students join our Department’s active research program and work as part of a team under the guidance of their supervisor.
As well as research training provided within the Department, students will have access to other relevant teaching in the Chinese University of Hong Kong to fully develop their research skills.
If you are interested in applying to our department, please visit the CUHK Graduate School website at [https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/] for detailed information about the application procedure, entry requirements, and program details.
