Dr Mahboobani attained his primary medical qualification from The University of Hong Kong, after which he underwent residency training in radiology in Princess Margaret Hospital. He completed his residency training in 2017 and joined the Department of Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology in Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in 2018 where his main area of work was in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology. He is a Credentialled Specialist under the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Credentialling for Endovascular Neurointerventional Procedures, and is accredited by Hong Kong College of Radiologists in the Subspecialty of Interventional Radiology. He was a key member in the establishment of the multi-disciplinary intra-arterial thrombectomy service for acute ischaemic stroke in QEH, and was actively involved in the planning and development of the Neuroscience Centre in the future New Acute Hospital in Kai Tak. He joined the Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2025.
Dr Mahboobani has also been actively involved in the use and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology. He is the Convener of the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence under the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and the Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Subcommittee of Hong Kong College of Radiologists. He played a central role in the territory wide implementation of AI for the detection of acute intracranial haemorrhage and midline shift on non-contrast CT brain scans in 17 public hospitals in Hong Kong.

Dr Mahboobani is passionate about teaching, be it teaching general radiology to junior residents, neuroradiology and interventional radiology to senior residents, young specialists, or allied health professionals. He was the Training Head at his former workplace in the Department of Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology in Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was one of the youngest, if not the youngest Training Head in the radiology residency programs in Hong Kong. Dr Mahboobani serves as a Honorary Consultant in the Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology, Prince of Wales Hospital where he provides general radiology, neuroradiology and interventional radiology services. He also serves or has served the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, Hong Kong College of Radiologists, Hospital Authority and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in various roles and capacities:

Dr Mahboobani joined the Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology in the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong with an ambition to drive advances in radiology and healthcare services with artificial intelligence (AI), and to pursue academia after a primarily service oriented career in the public healthcare sector of Hong Kong in his early years. He is also enthusiastic about bridging conventional interventional techniques with extended reality (XR).
